HELP Projects
Project 4: Safe and cost-effective adaptation of alternative energy technologies for emergency vehicles.
Emergency response agencies also must make the transition to alternative energy sources. For example, fire apparatus must comply with new federal air emission requirements on diesel engines and fuels. Approximately 5,000 pumpers, ladder trucks and other vehicles are produced annually and must be fitted with emissions control devices, typically a system of filters and catalyzers which may add as much as $15,000 to the cost of a vehicle. The safety risks presented by these emissions control devices are just now being understood. Fire departments, apparatus and drive train manufacturers need help in identifying cost-effective means of safely complying with air emission requirements.
